The surprise on her face was unmistakable as she arrived and took in the soft clinking of champagne glasses, the low swell of music, and the curated elegance of the cocktail party. He noted the slight hesitation in her step and how she quickly gathered herself and slipped back into her professional mask. Dressed in a feminine suit, she had obviously anticipated a boardroom meeting, not a cocktail party.

Sofia slowly walked through the opulent hall of Filip Dubois’s Paris mansion, looking for George Sand. She paused when her eyes caught a scene of a monstrous arch of a dragon’s back looming over a radiant female figure. Sofia found herself drawn to the grotesque tension in the painting, the devilish intelligence in the monster’s eyes, the hard geometry of its wings. She noted the way the dragon’s claws seemed to reach out of the frame.

“The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun by William Blake,” she muttered to herself in awe, “it couldn’t possibly …”

“It is.” Filip Dubois, with the unsettling talent of moving silently through crowded rooms, drifted up beside her. He kept enough distance to be polite, but close enough to make his presence unmistakable. He followed her gaze, integrating her reaction to the information.

“It is the original but only on loan. The director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, is a friend and allowed me this honor. She’s here somewhere. I would be pleased to introduce you to her.”

They continued to observe the painting in silence for another moment.

“What do you see when you look at this piece, Dr. Bulsara?” Filip’s French accent was rounded off by the edge of Italian.

Sofia kept her eyes on the painting.

“I see fear,” Sofia said. “Primal, existential, inescapable fear.”

Filip smiled and turned to watch Sofia now.

“And the woman?”

Sofia tilted her head.

“She’s not a victim. She’s the reason the dragon exists. She is humanity, stripped of all its pretenses—defenseless, luminous, and condemned to be preyed upon, most often by its own creations.” Sofia paused. “The beast is necessary; otherwise, the story has no climax.”

She finally looked at Filip.

“Faith conquers fear, Dr. Bulsara. My name is Filip Dubois. Welcome to my home.”

Sofia turned fully to face him.

“I disagree, monsieur. Faith doesn’t conquer fear. It gives it shape. However, the state of the world underscores the grave consequences of humanity’s spiritual defection. I have seen what faith becomes when it mutates into certainty. And I have seen what certainty does to the body and the mind.” She thrust out a hand. “How do you do?”

Filip Dubois took her hand and kissed it gallantly, instead of shaking it. Sofia felt his warm fingers and the soft touch of his lips. Filip slowly released Sofia’s hand and his eyes went back to the painting.

“A mutual friend didn’t warn me that you are not only a neurobiologist, but a connoisseur of obscure art. Freud would be delighted, no? Or perhaps terrified.”

“I take it you’ve read my work.” Sofia was intrigued.

“Cover to cover. And the footnotes.” Filip’s voice shifted to a warmer register. “Dr. Bulsara, you certainly have a way of diagnosing the ruthlessness of human trauma in an almost … affectionate way. It’s fresh.” He gestured at the painting. “But do you truly believe the dragon always wins?”

“Not always,” Sofia replied. “But the dragon never dies. The best we can do is convince ourselves it can be tamed for a while.”

Filip’s eyes lit with genuine delight. “It delights me—your domestication of the apocalypse. We have similarities, you and I.”

Sofia allowed herself a tiny smile. “If we do, then one of us should be afraid.” She surveyed the room. “I thought this was to be a business meeting. This looks suspiciously like a party.”

Filip shrugged. “In my experience, business dies where joy is absent. And tonight, I had hoped to welcome you properly. Though I admit, the guest list is not entirely my own. George insisted on a certain … spectacle.”

He leaned in, and almost whispered. “You have friends here tonight, Dr. Bulsara. I sometimes think we all are the woman clothed with the sun. Naked beneath our armor. What do you suppose the dragon wants?” Filip continued briskly.

“To be worshipped. To be obeyed. To know it’s alive.”

“And you? What do you want?” Filip took a sip from his champagne glass.

“I want to be free,” Sofia answered, and the brevity of the confession startled even herself.

“I think the dragon would be disappointed.” Filip laughed.

Filip found himself spellbound by Sofia, the magic of which was interrupted by George Sand bursting onto the scene with his usual flamboyant demeanor on full display and an elegant woman on his arm, whom he introduced as Janaki Nakamura, the rising star of the racing world.

“The fastest woman to ever drive on earth. Sponsored by SAND Labs, of course.”

“Very nice to see you again.” Sofia hinted at the charity concert of the Viennese Philharmonic where the two women had first met. Janaki Nakamura, a Japanese American, had lived in Vienna for years after marrying the conductor.

“Janaki is one of the ambassadors of our sensory crown’s marketing campaign,” George announced and missed Janaki’s eyes widening in shock. Sofia raised her eyebrows in surprise. The group stood in brief silence and Sofia felt the air become thick. She was again having trouble breathing. Janaki hesitated before nodding slowly. Her lips were pressed together in a thin line.

“This evening is full of surprises.” Filip assumed his diplomatic role and ushered them through the cocktail party and toward a spacious dining room where the board members of SAND Labs eagerly awaited their arrival. Sofia fought to remain calm, though the situation was draining her energy. She felt exhausted. She surveyed the room, and noticed Filip had quietly taken a spot at the back, acting as an attentive observer. He absentmindedly played with a ring on his finger. The gold ring, with intricate engravings, caught the light as he turned it, revealing an unfamiliar symbol that Sofia couldn’t make out from a distance.
<div She has no intention of soothing or telling the writer she’s wonderful and that everything will turn out fine, because the writer will throw something at her if she does. The publisher just leans back with her morning coffee in hand, a little amused, and says: “Good. Stay angry. You’re gonna need it. But you’re aiming it at the wrong thing.”

That’s the moment the author grabs the lamp and throws it at the publisher.

The Publisher’s monologue

“Quit guarding the book like a relic,” the publisher says. “I know you bled into it. You’re standing in front of it with a sword, wanting people to approach on their knees, but your book is not a shrine. It’s the best thing you’ve ever made, however it’s a product. Stop being a wounded artist and start thinking like a publisher.

You keep asking “how do I sell my book?” I’d ask: what makes this story packaged as a book impossible to ignore? You think the book is the paycheck. So when it doesn’t pay, you decide you’re the failure. The book is not the cheque. The book is the proof. It’s the thing that earns you the right to everything that actually pays. Open up to the teaching, the leading, the worlds you build, the rooms you’ll be invited into precisely because you wrote it. You’ve been staring at the sales number on the page and calling yourself nothing because of it. Face it, you are in it for the long game.

Publishing is a gambling business. Most books lose money; only a few pay for everything. I bet on a Venezuelan writer, serialized him chapter by chapter, and built a studio around someone else’s gift before I had any proof his stories would sell. I backed difficult genius on instinct. As a publisher I am running a portfolio, and I take a flyer on twenty titles knowing three will carry the list. That means when I signed you, I placed a bet. You are not the only horse in my stable. Take it as an example - build your own author’s portfolio. Speak, consult, run workshops, build communities and license your work, with your book as the credibility. Stop viewing the book as the pay cheque.

Subscribe now

I learned early that controversy is free advertising, and the smart publisher engineers the conversation rather than waits for it. She fought the cold, unyielding metal that was crushing her face. Each breath bounced back at her as the sharp, acrid taste of iron invaded her mouth and panic suffocated her. Desperate for air, she thrashed wildly against the bedsheets, tore herself free and tumbled from her bed. She stood in front of the mirror in her dark bedroom. Only a contour of a silhouette was visible. Despite its tightness, the iron helmet pressing against her head felt oddly light. Sofia, desperate for air, burst out of her apartment, and stumbled onto the street. Outside the Vienna streets were replaced by a world choked in ash. The ground underneath was soft, lifeless dust. Sofia looked around. Charred skeletons of trees and their bare branches clawed at her, burned by some unknown inferno. The stench of fire filled her nostrils as she sprinted without destination. Suddenly, her foot caught on something, sending her crashing to the ground as her head, encased in iron, hit the jagged black earth. A piercing, relentless alarm from her smartphone shattered the nightmare, dragging her to the reality of the early waking world.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Sofia sat up gasping. Her silky brown hair was wet from sweat and plastered to her face and neck. With shaking fingers, she touched up to her scalp, feeling for metal, but found only damp skin. The relief made her dizzy. She swung her legs over the side of the bed, waiting for her breathing to slow as the dim streetlight cut harsh lines across the polished wooden floor of her apartment on the corner of Wipplingerstrasse and Färbergasse in the Vienna 1st district. She walked over to the large window overlooking the cobbled street below. Outside, just like every day, people were starting to line up in front of the pharmacy across the street. Soon the line, which seemingly doubled daily, would stretch for blocks. Most people had their eyes glued to their smartphones, leaning against the cold stone wall of the beautiful Viennese building, and shuffling on their feet as they waited. Sofia saw their breath rising visibly in the cold air. Just above them, a bright digital display of a massive advertising billboard cast an eerie glow. “A NEW ERA OF HAPPINESS.” Sofia read the ad’s bold and vague statement aloud with a tone of sarcasm. Soon … very soon, I will be able to help you all, she thought and stepped away from the window. She switched it on and, leaning on the kitchen counter, studied her daily schedule on her phone, waiting for the espresso machine to heat up. It was her daily morning ritual, even on weekends; for Dr. Sofia Bulsara, weekends didn’t exist. She worked every day. As the head scientist at SAND Labs and psychiatrist by profession, Sofia had dedicated her life to understanding the nature and biology of the human psyche, and methods to heal it without medication or artificial alteration. People were drowning in depression and the opioids were taking over the world. She poured herself a strong double espresso, and as a true caffeine junkie, inhaled its rich aroma before taking a slow sip. She turned back to her phone, and scrolled through a stream of global news updates. A polished blond anchor, smiling too broadly, narrated the morning headlines: “Global serotonin levels at record lows—what does this mean for our future?” The screen then cut to a man in his early forties, with pink hair, a confident smile and exuding effortless charisma. The broad smile of George Sand, the CEO of SAND Labs, filled the frame.

“Mr. Sand,” the anchorwoman addressed him, “we are in the middle of the most severe happiness crisis in human history. Meanwhile, SAND Labs’ third-quarter results show a persistent decline in profits and that is, according to the industry experts, due to absence of any significant innovation over the last eighteen months. It seems SAND Labs is failing to deliver the promised happiness to both its customers and shareholders.” The journalist leaned slightly forward to George Sand in expectation of his reply.

“Well, Joan, the world is in for a surprise!” George Sand replied calmly. “I’d rather say that humanity is about to experience a major breakthrough as SAND Labs is about to revolutionize mental health. Our brilliant scientist and mastermind, Dr. Sofia Bulsara, will unveil the antidote to humanity’s happiness crisis at The Innovation Conference in Paris tomorrow.”

“Currently happiness is a luxury. Another drug on the market, Mr. Sand?” the anchor challenged.

“Happiness should not be a luxury,” George continued uninhibited. “We’ve evolved over the past year. SAND Labs is now a well-being company. For the past year and a half we’ve been investing in emotional health centers, global retreat resorts, and top-tier experts. Our Happiness Campus in Vienna is the largest and most modern of its kind. SAND Labs is the future of emotional health.” George looked directly into the camera and said, “As the founder of SAND Labs, it is my personal mission to bring you happiness. I promise, you will be happy.”

The segment ended with sweeping visuals of the SAND Happiness Campus, other SAND clinics and wellness centers around the world, and resorts in stunning locations, where people practiced yoga and meditated in high-tech rooms with sleek-looking gear. Sofia’s fingers tightened around her coffee cup. The Paris Innovation Conference was just a day away, and the thought of presenting her life’s work made her nervous. Sofia’s invention offered a radical alternative: a way to heal depression naturally, by activating the pineal gland’s innate chemistry and freeing people from dependence on pharmaceuticals. With his dramatic marketing campaign, George Sand had unfortunately turned it into a spectacle before the launch and without Sofia’s consent.

On her way to the shower, Sofia walked past the window and looked at the billboard again. A NEW ERA OF HAPPINESS. Below the headline, an image showed a figure standing in a beam of radiant light, arms outstretched, as if ascending to some higher plane of existence. There were no details, just the logo of SAND Labs, and the promise of transcendence. The image, in Sofia’s opinion, ironically alluded to something out of reach by being vague, and undeniably provocative—just like George’s strategy.

“Pathetic,” Sofia swore out loud. She hated that George Sand fed the media with exaggerated, highly unserious claims. It’s not about happiness; it’s about emotional balance, she thought. A text from Noah Singer, her assistant, appeared on her phone screen: Lab is ready. You should see the final updates before Paris. You have a mass of urgent media requests for interviews. Noah had obviously pulled another all-nighter. The phone display showed a call from an unknown number. She declined it and watched more calls flood her screen in quick succession.

Sofia checked her watch, and calculated whether to pack for Paris now or in the afternoon. Out of eagerness to get to the lab as soon as possible, she opted against packing and headed for the shower. The hot water stung her shoulders red, but she welcomed the distraction from the growing circus outside her control. Her work wasn’t meant to be salvation wrapped in marketing gold. It was science, pure and methodical, designed to restore what pharmaceuticals had stolen from humanity. What if George was right? What if people needed the spectacle, the promise of salvation? she thought and pressed her forehead against the tile. She stepped out of the shower, wrapped her head in a towel and wiped the steam from the bathroom mirror with her hand. As she watched her blurred expression in the mirror, she couldn’t help but wonder if her refusal to play messiah was principle or fear. She remembered her nightmare.

Sofia brewed her second double espresso of the morning. The ritual was as essential as breathing. Recently, when her espresso machine had died overnight, she’d arrived at the lab disheveled, hair still wet, laptop forgotten on her kitchen counter. She remembered Noah’s expression. “I’ve finally confirmed my theory,” he’d said and shook his head, leaning against her office doorframe. “You’re not actually human. You’re just a sophisticated algorithm that runs on double espresso.” Sofia laughed and got dressed.

Welcome to the world of Golden Force. It doesn’t block my vision entirely because that would be too obvious and too easy to diagnose. Instead it reframes everything in reverse. It takes the evidence of my life and rearranges it into a narrative of failure so convincing that I walk around inside my success story believing I am in the wrong movie. I spent five years building something extraordinary and almost the entire time I was convinced I was failing.

June 17, 2021

I was driving on the highway to Vienna (I live in the countryside) and talking to my friend Sandra on the phone. Sandra was a film director and screenwriter who knew the film industry and who had just sent me her latest movie script.

I had read half of it the night before and I loved it, and I was telling her so when suddenly I blurted out: “I have an idea for a TV series. How about I sell it and finance your film?”

It was supposed to be a joke. But at the exact moment the words left my mouth, the idea arrived and I clearly saw eight warriors and a woman called The Source. I saw the entire architecture of the plot in a single flash on a highway outside Vienna.

Sandra went quiet. Then she asked: “Wait. What did you just say?”

Subscribe now

The dream I chose

At this point in my life my business was growing beyond my expectations and I was considering scaling it. I was good at what I did and my clients were getting extraordinary results. There were many more on a waiting list. But I was depleted. I was giving more of myself to other people’s breakthroughs than I was keeping for my own, and somewhere along the way I had stopped asking myself what I actually wanted. I was forty-four years old and I finally wanted to chase my own dreams, except I had been so busy building other people’s lives that I had forgotten what mine were. Sandra’s phone call triggered a storm that refused to leave.

Sandra knew the industry. She dropped a few names of people in Los Angeles who could receive a pitch, and her contacts who might listen and I allowed myself to dream big. The story became a film trilogy. I saw the new Star Wars. I saw a franchise that could travel across languages and cultures. Sandra read the outline and and loved it. We agreed I would write a full film treatment for the entire trilogy and we also agreed that we needed seventy percent of it finished before we could pitch it to her contacts in Los Angeles.

My vision developed into a clear and rigid plan: write the treatment, sell the rights, and let someone else write the scripts because I was not a writer. I saw myself watching my movies.

The years that followed

I worked on the treatment. As you may notice, I did not use the word “write”; rather I worked in it. Sandra reviewed it, and we went back and forth for a year and a half drafting, reworking, arguing about structure, and debating character arcs. And then, just before we were ready to send it to Los Angeles (or I thought we were), something didn’t feel right. I couldn’t name it. The story had evolved past its own outline and half of what I had written no longer belonged. So I did what no rational person in my position would do — I deleted half the story and started from the beginning. Sandra applauded.

Another year of back and forth went by. Another year of late nights and rewrites and debates that swung between exhilaration and exhaustion. Sandra and I were pulling in different directions, and eventually we reached the point where the only honest thing to do was to agree to disagree and go our separate ways. With Sandra gone, my doorway to the film industry closed and then disappeared. I was left holding a detailed film treatment for a trilogy without a path to screen or plan B. I had borrowed a six-figure sum to fund this journey. The debt was real and it was growing and the breakthrough I had been counting on had just evaporated.

You see, in my head, success had only one shape: to sell the right to Golden Force so that someone else could write it and turn it into movies. Since that specific shape had not materialized, that filter I mentioned at the beginning told me I was failing miserably.

April 2025

My dance partner Alois, a Venezuelan author with three published and five unpublished novels, did not have a publisher at the time and I had the idea to help him. That’s a story for next week. Watch out for the title “Publisher on the dance floor”. Within two months I published his novel in Spanish (original) and then in German. I was sitting with his book in my hands — a real, physical book with a spine and a cover with the logo of Goldacht, my publishing company, and I thought: “If he can write, so can I.”

Painful months

By then Golden Force was a detailed film treatment for a fully outlined, deeply researched trilogy. How difficult would it be to turn it into three novels? As I sat down to write, I was drowning in shame and still convinced that everything I was doing was a desperate attempt to salvage a crumbling impression of myself. I did’t see myself as becoming a novelist. I was executing plan B because plan A had failed and I needed something — anything — to show for the years and the money and the sleepless nights I had poured into a vision that I had buried.

The damned filter took the next most important creative decision of my life and reframed it as damage control. Crazy.

I finished the first draft of Golden Force: The Source in four months, by the end of August. Then I poured another four months into rewriting, and those were the most painful months of my entire life.

The world opened and I was ashamed

I published Golden Force: The Source in February 2026 in English under my own publishing label, GOLDACHT. A month later the German edition followed Golden Force: Die Quelle. And in May 2026 I published the Spanish edition Golden Force: La Fuente, making the trilogy available in three languages that could be shipped globally.

I was in Madrid when La Fuente went live. I was standing in a city I had fallen in love with, announcing that my novel was now available in three languages, and in my head I was still refusing to call myself an author, only because it wasn’t the original plan. See the subtlty? A plan. Not a dream. The original plan was to sell the rights. The original plan was a film trilogy. No amount of evidence or the five-star reviews from readers who said they couldn’t put it down, were enough to override the filter’s verdict: you didn’t achieve what you set out to achieve, therefore you failed.

June 2, 2026

It is today. I woke up with an understanding in my head that stories choose how to be born. The filter was gone for no specific reason, allowing a reconciliation between my mind and my heart. Finally! I understood that I hadn’t failed and that I didn’t execute plan B. I followed a spark that arrived on June 17, 2021 and it led me to exactly where I was supposed to be. A published author of a trilogy in three languages, the founder of an international publishing studio. I became aware of the woman in me who’d left the boardroom to built worlds ON HER OWN TERMS.

One of my earliest dreams did come true when I published the story cinematically. The morning the book went live, the final cut of the book trailer arrived in my inbox and I watched my characters step into the light for the first time.

And still, I wouldn’t admit to myself that I had made it.

Until now.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I’m Joan Hartley. Our top story this hour — global serotonin levels have reached record lows. Scientists are calling it the most severe happiness crisis in recorded human history. But this morning, one man says he has the answer. George Sand, founder and CEO of SAND Labs, joins us live from Vienna. Mr. Sand, good morning.

GEORGE SAND: Good morning, Joan. And what a morning it is.

[07:14:31]

JOAN HARTLEY: Mr. Sand, let’s get straight to it. SAND Labs’ third-quarter results show a persistent decline in profits. Industry experts are pointing to an absence of significant innovation over the last eighteen months. Some are saying SAND Labs is failing — failing its customers, failing its shareholders. How do you respond to that?

GEORGE SAND: (brief pause) Joan. The world is in for a surprise.

JOAN HARTLEY: That’s quite a statement.

[07:15:04]

GEORGE SAND: It’s quite a moment. What I can tell you — what I am telling you, right now, on live television — is that humanity is about to experience a major breakthrough. Our brilliant scientist and mastermind, Dr. Sofia Bulsara, will unveil the antidote to humanity’s happiness crisis. Tomorrow. At The Innovation Conference in Paris.

[07:15:29]

JOAN HARTLEY: (slight edge) The antidote. That’s a strong word, Mr. Sand. Currently happiness is a luxury most people cannot afford. Are we talking about another drug on the market?

GEORGE SAND: Happiness should not be a luxury, Joan. That’s precisely the point. SAND Labs has evolved. We are no longer simply a technology company. We are a well-being company. For the past eighteen months we have been investing — quietly, deliberately — in emotional health centers, global retreat resorts, and the world’s foremost experts in human happiness. Our Happiness Campus in Vienna is the largest, most modern facility of its kind on the planet.

[07:16:18]

JOAN HARTLEY: And Dr. Bulsara’s announcement tomorrow — can you give us anything? Any preview at all?

GEORGE SAND: (directly, controlled) I can give you this. As the founder of SAND Labs, it is my personal mission to bring you happiness.

(pause — 2.1 seconds)

I promise.

(beat — 1.4 seconds)

You will be happy.

[07:16:47 — SILENCE — 2.0 seconds]

JOAN HARTLEY: George Sand, founder and CEO of SAND Labs. I woke up early, the way I always do, made coffee, and opened my inbox. There was a link to the final cut of the book trailer for Golden Force: The Source, the first book in a trilogy I had spent four years writing. I clicked it expecting to review and give notes (let me just say it was the day of the launch), to adjust, tighten, and possibly redirect. That’s what I do — I spent fifteen years leading teams across nine countries, and the instinct to manage, and to refine the outcome is baked into me so deeply that I don’t even notice it anymore.

But I didn’t give revision notes. I started crying.

Four years of silence

I need to explain what those four years felt like, because otherwise the tears don’t make sense.

When you write a novel, especially one that lives in a world as large as Golden Force, the characters exist in a place that nobody else can visit, namely inside your head. You hear their voices when you’re cooking dinner. You feel their decisions pressing on you when you’re trying to fall asleep. You argue with them in the shower about choices they’re making that you know will hurt them. You know the color of the light in the room where the worst thing happens. You know the exact temperature of the air in the courtyard of a Viennese palace where a man is watching a woman from a window five stories up. You know these things with the kind of certainty that makes you wonder whether you invented them or whether they were always there, waiting for someone to write them down.

And for four years, all of that existed in absolute silence because I could not discuss it with anyone. My protagonist, Dr. Sofia Bulsara was real to me in all her stubbornness, her brilliance, and the inability to see what was happening around her until it was too late. George Sand was real to me with his charm, his control, and the way he could make you believe that what he was doing was beautiful even when you knew it was monstrous. I won’t even mention (for now) the eight warriors, the temple, the golden light, the crown, Safe Town… The loneliness of carrying a world inside you that nobody else knows exists is the loneliest part of writing.

Seventy-two seconds

The trailer was seventy-two seconds long. I kid you not, the length itself blew my mind. In those seventy-two seconds, I saw Filip introduce Sofia at the Innovation Conference in Paris — his voice warm, proud, slightly nervous, exactly the way I had heard it in my head for three years. I saw Sofia step onto the stage and I felt the weight of what she was about to announce, the weight she didn’t yet understand, pressing down on her shoulders.

I saw the safe town, not as a description on a page but as a place with light falling through trees, with stone walls that remembered nine hundred years of silence, with a presence that felt ancient and patient and completely indifferent to human time.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" golden light split into eight strands, and for the first time in four years, the world I had been carrying inside me existed outside of me.

It had color. It had sound. It had atmosphere and emotional weight. The characters were breathing.

The world was moving. The only thing missing was the scent, but we’ll figure that out someday.

What I was relieved about

I was relieved that my book trailer was not a low-budget attempt to make a novel look like a movie by using stock footage, dramatic voiceover, and text fading in and out like a PowerPoint presentation with a soundtrack. I have seen hundreds of those and every single one of them makes the book feel smaller than it is.

I was even more relieved that the book trailer did not attempt to imitate a film. That’s the trap most book trailers fall into — they try to look like a movie trailer, and because they don’t have a movie’s budget, they end up looking like a movie trailer that failed. That’s the uncanny valley of book marketing.

The Golden Force book trailer didn’t imitate anything. It did what a book trailer is supposed to do: portray the core, tease, show a glimpse of the world, and sell. It made my wish come true as an author — to see my characters alive, moving, occupying space in a world that matched the one I had spent four years building in silence.

Watch the Golden Force book trailer here

What a book trailer is actually for

A book trailer is the moment your story steps out of your head and into the world. It’s the first time your characters exist independently of your imagination. It’s proof — to yourself, to your readers, to the industry — that the world you built is real enough to be seen, heard, and felt by strangers.

With today’s platforms — Instagram, YouTube, Amazon, an author’s own website — a trailer works across every channel, in every language, twenty-four hours a day. It’s not an expense or an indulgence. It’s the tool that keeps selling your story while you’re busy writing the next one. Yes, a book trailer is indeed a commercial and a marketing deliverable that checks a box on a launch plan.

And if you’re an author, a publisher or an agent reading this and thinking “I wish I could see the characters like that” — I make it possible. Your book has a world inside it. I make people see it.

I left the boardroom to build worlds.

Mirela Vahdani — founder of GOLDACHT Studio, author of the Golden Force Trilogy

goldenforceworld.com

Thanks for reading! Use any channel you like; you can even go to a library, a blog, a course, or an AI chatbot. The playbook is always the same, whether a major publisher is behind it or a first-time author working from a kitchen table:

Post the cover.

Announce the date.

Share a review quote.

Ask people to pre-order.

Do an Instagram live.

Run a giveaway.

Post a countdown.

Write “link in bio” seventeen times.

Hope.

I did none of that.

Of course I knew the playbook. I spent twenty years in international business development and I know how campaigns and funnels work. I also know how people make decisions. Therefore it was obvious to me that, from the moment my novel Golden Force was ready to enter the world, that the standard playbook would make it invisible, because the standard playbook treats a book like a product. I had imagined Golden Force a world. Worlds reveal themselves slowly, in fragments, until the person watching realizes they’ve been standing inside one without knowing when they crossed the border.

What I actually did

I launched a website called goldenforceworld.com as a world hub. It had three entry points: The World, The Conflict, The Forces, and it existed in English, German, and Spanish from day one, weeks before the German and Spanish editions were even published. The website didn’t explain Golden Force. A visitor who landed there encountered a world that was already alive, breathing, and already operating in three languages across multiple continents. They arrived at a place that felt like it had existed long before they found it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" exists independently just like a franchise. Marvel doesn’t introduce itself as “a series of movies by Kevin Feige.” The world speaks for itself. Golden Force World does the same.

I launched a teaser in English, Spanish, and German before the German and Spanish editions existed. That confused people who think in terms of product launches and distribution timelines. But it made perfect sense if you think in terms of world-building. The teaser was the herald that announced that something was coming in three languages. It signaled scale that had nothing to do with how many copies were printed and everything to do with how large the world intended to become.

I produced a seventy-two-second cinematic trailer with original voice acting, cinematic pacing, and a visual language. People who watched it didn’t think “that’s a nice book ad.” They thought “what is this?”

The part that made people uncomfortable

Finally, I ran an advertising campaign for a fictional corporation.

SAND Labs is the antagonist’s company in Golden Force. It’s a global well-being corporation that promises humanity a new era of happiness. In the novel, SAND Labs runs billboard campaigns, television interviews, campus enrollments — the entire machinery of a real corporation selling a vision of the future.

I took that campaign out of the book and put it into the real world. I created SAND Labs billboard visuals in three languages. I produced a television interview with the CEO, George Sand, using AI-generated voice acting. I designed magazine covers from three fictional publications — Vanguard in English, Zeitlinie in German, La Señal in Spanish — each running the same story about the same man making the same promise. I posted all of it on Instagram as if SAND Labs were a real corporation making a real announcement.

People scrolling past this content didn’t immediately know it was fiction. That was exactly the point. The line between the real world and the Golden Force world blurred, and in that blur — in that moment of uncertainty where someone thinks “wait, is this real?” — the marketing became the story which leaked itself leaking into reality.

No publishing playbook teaches you to do this. No indie author course suggests launching a fictional corporation’s ad campaign as your marketing strategy.

Why I’m writing about this

Don’t abandon the standard playbook. Introduce it later. For most books, the standard playbook works well enough. Post the cover, announce the date, share the reviews, build the list. It’s proven and it’s efficient.

But if your book has a world inside it — if the story you’ve written is bigger than a single narrative, if the characters exist in a place that feels real, if the themes connect to something your readers are already feeling about the world they live in — then the standard playbook is not just insufficient.

Your book deserves to be experienced; it deserves to be felt before it’s purchased. It deserves to arrive in someone’s life as a world they stumble into and can’t leave.

That’s what I built for Golden Force. And that’s what I build for other authors through GOLDACHT Studio — because every book has a world inside it, and my job is to make people see it.

The one thing I did last

After the website was live, after the Instagram was running, after the teaser and the trailer and the SAND Labs campaign were all breathing in three languages — only then did I mention that the story of Golden Force: The Source comes in the form of a book, because by that point, the people who had been watching didn’t need to be sold. They only needed to be told where the door was, only to walk through it on their own.

I left the boardroom to build worlds.

Mirela Vahdani — founder of GOLDACHT Studio, author of the Golden Force Trilogy

goldenforceworld.com

Thanks for reading! I know very well the silence that follows a cover reveal. I refreshed, hoped and was devastated when the post reached forty people and none of them clicked. The cover was a door no one opened.

We live in a world where people scroll past doors at the speed of light. What makes them stop is a mixture of design, motion, sound, and emotion delivered in the first two seconds before the conscious mind has decided whether to care.

Think about how you discover new movies. You don’t necessarily read the synopsis first. You watch the trailer. A mood hits you, a character intrigues you, the music pulls you somewhere unexpected — and suddenly you’re watching something you’d never heard of five seconds ago. That trailer made you feel something, and the feeling did the selling without explaining the movie.

Books deserve the same chance. But most authors and publishers are still marketing like it’s 2015 with a cover reveal, a blurb, a link to Amazon, and a prayer.

The morning I saw my characters for the first time

I will never forget February 21, 2026. I opened my inbox early that morning and found the link to the final cut of the book trailer for Golden Force: The Source, the first book in the trilogy I spent four years writing.

I started crying.

I finally saw my characters step into the light and occupy a visual world that had color, sound, atmosphere, and emotional weight. For four years those people had lived only inside my head. I heard their voices in silence and felt their struggles alone. And suddenly there they were breathing and moving in a world that finally matched the one I had been carrying in my mind.

The trailer was seventy-two seconds long. It had original voice acting — Sofia’s voice, Filip’s voice, each one crafted in ElevenLabs until they sounded exactly the way I had always heard them. It had cinematic pacing that felt like a Netflix series trailer, not a book advertisement. It had the conference in Paris, the safe town, the transformation, the warriors assembling. Seventy-two seconds that compressed four years of world-building into something a stranger could feel in under two minutes.

And here’s the part that would have seemed impossible five years ago: I directed it from my apartment in Vienna using AI tools.

The production barrier has collapsed

A cinematic book trailer used to require a five-figure budget and a production crew. I didn’t have that. However, what I did have was creative direction and the ability to see the whole picture and orchestrate every detail toward one emotional moment.

The technology is the easy part. The vision is a creative challenge.

I used the tools accessible for everyone: Kling AI for video generation, ElevenLabs for voice acting, and DaVinci Resolve for assembly, text, and subtitles. But the tools can’t know what your story feels like. They don’t know which frame should open the trailer, which silence should last a beat longer, which voice should crack slightly on a particular word.

The technology is the instrument. The creative vision is the music.

I directed that trailer the same way I spent fifteen years leading teams across nine countries — seeing the whole picture, orchestrating every detail, and knowing that the emotional moment is the only thing that matters. The boardroom trained me for this.

What a book trailer actually does

Authors who invest in motion get more visibility in today’s visual reality and in addition they get a different kind of reader.

A cover attracts someone who is already browsing for books. A trailer reaches someone who wasn’t looking for a book at all. She was scrolling Instagram or watching YouTube or sitting on a train with her phone, and something stopped her — a mood, a voice, a world she hadn’t seen before. She felt something before she knew what she was feeling. And by the time she realized it was a book trailer, she was already curious enough to click.

That reader arrives emotionally primed. She doesn’t need to be convinced by a blurb or persuaded by a review. She already feels something about the world. The book becomes the answer to a question the trailer planted in her chest.

With today’s platforms — Instagram, YouTube, Amazon, an author’s own website — a trailer works across every channel, in every language, twenty-four hours a day. It’s not an expense. It’s the tool that keeps selling your story while you’re busy writing the next one.

I produced the Golden Force trailer in English with German and Spanish subtitles.

The question every author should ask

You spent months, most likely years, writing your book.

Now ask yourself: does your marketing make someone feel even a fraction of what your book makes them feel? Or are you asking a static image and a paragraph of text to do the work that motion, sound, and emotion were born to do?

While your cover opens the door, your trailer makes someone walk through it.

I left the boardroom to build worlds.

Mirela Vahdani — founder of GOLDACHT Studio, author of the Golden Force Trilogy

goldenforceworld.com

Thanks for reading! It becomes real when people can see it and feel it. The words on the page are the foundation, but the cinematic world around them is what opens the door and invites someone to step through.

That’s why I rebuilt Goldacht into a cinematic story studio and that’s what I do for other authors and publishers now. I build the door, and that door is the teaser, the book trailer and the entire visual identity that makes a story visible before someone has read a single line.

If something pulls you in, trust that feeling. idea.” I never really wanted to write a novel.

I spent three years developing the story as as a film in my head. From the beginning I saw it in scenes: the light, the shadows, the silence before a choice, the moment a technology meant to help people becomes something that can be used against them. The idea of Golden Force trilogy was conceived with cinematic DNA, simply because that’s how the story popped in my head one day in the summer of 2021.

I guess stories don’t always get to enter the world in the format you first imagine. In early 2025, as it seemed Golden Force would die, I finally gave in. I sat down and wrote it down as a science mystery novel. The story of Golden Force had to be born as a book first.

On February 21, 2026, I released Golden Force: The Source (Book 1) in English, followed by German edition in March 2026, and by the Spanish edition soon after in May 2026.

At the center is Dr. Sofia Bulsara, a neuroscientist whose happiness‑enhancing technology becomes the battleground for an ancient conflict between light and shadow. It’s a story about what happens when “happiness” becomes a product—when it can be engineered, scaled, and ultimately weaponized. And it’s about the acient force that awakens to stop that from happening.

I want to be clear about something else, too.
